I am so excited to welcome the Burkes to the Baby's First Year plan! Lacie and Garrett's maternity session was so much fun and I can tell that they are going to be great parents and definitely one of my favorite clients. Any soon-to-be-mom who is willing to stand in the snow for portraits at thirty five weeks pregnant is going to be a whole lot of fun to work with!
This session was actually the first time I met the Burkes in person. We connected through Mike of Maple & Honey, who created my amazing HeartStrings video and is a family member of Lacie's. When it came time for us to have our initial consultation appointment, I was sick with what I thought was a cold, so we rescheduled. Then before we could meet, I came down with the flu! I was super paranoid about getting Lacie sick, so we did our consultation via video chat. It was a first for me, but it all worked out. I felt awful about the whole thing, but Lacie was flexible and gracious and I could tell right away that I was going to enjoy working with her.
I drove out to their home the day of the session. They have a beautiful new house in the country. The drive was full of back roads and gorgeous scenery. The first thing I did when I arrived was to bring poor Lacie outside and make her stand in the snow! The weather wasn't too cold or I wouldn't have suggested the outdoor shots. I brought along my white furry blanket that I typically use for newborn sessions to wrap her in. She joked that she probably looked like an abominable snowman, but she looked absolutely beautiful.
We moved inside for the rest of the session. Since it was my first time at their house, it took me a little bit to figure out where I wanted to shoot...where the best light and background was. We tried a few different areas of their home. This door was in their dining room, and the windows looked out on a barn with some vehicles parked in front of it. I had to do some creative shooting and editing so that it wasn't a distraction.
I got down low to take this shot and I was at just the right angle to the sun coming through the window for this sun flare to shoot across my frame. I got so excited! This is one of those cool effects that never look this good when I do it on purpose. This happy accident is probably my favorite image from the session.
We moved upstairs into Baby's nursery. Lacie and Garrett couldn't agree on which color to paint her room, so they compromised and did both! Two walls are pink and two are purple. I loved how the two walls met in this corner with the window light right there. We picked the best sonogram photo from their collection so that Baby could make her first appearance. The 3D sonogram photos are so cool. You can really see her little face! I asked Mom and Dad to kiss for one of the shots and Garrett couldn't stop laughing. When we sat down for the Purchasing Appointment he said he was surprised that I was able to actually capture the kiss.
I am a huge lover of books, so this pose is one of my absolute favorites to do with expecting moms. As you can see, Lacie had fun with it. I will bet she'll always be able to recite the words on that one page she stared at the whole time!
Lacie and Garrett's house has a gorgeous loft that overlooks the main living area. I had to do a few poses up there. Some soon-to-be-moms that I have worked with don't want to do bare belly shots, but Lacie was ok with trying it. I brought a button down shirt and we clipped it in the back. I think she looks amazing! While we did these shots, Garrett and Lacie's dog watched. I thought the session was done, but the dog came over to say hello and suddenly they were perfectly posed! None of us expected the dog to sit so well or look at the camera. We had decided early on not to even try. And then this happened! This is why I never shut off my camera until I'm driving away.
One of my favorite parts of the Baby's First Year plan is knowing that I will have the privilege of photographing the family's journey for an entire year. I am so excited to meet Baby Burke and watch her grow and change. I'm excited to watch Lacie and Garrett grow and change as parents, too.
